The Irish Professional Photographer’s Association/Royal & Sun Alliance Awards ceremony took place in the ballroom at the Shelbourne in Dublin last night. This the Oscars of our industry here in Ireland.
I was nominated in the Best Commercial Image and Best Commerical Portfolio categories. To keep the Oscar analogy going: Best Supporting (Commercial) Actor and Best (Commercial) Actor.
It was my first year as a nominee in both of these categories.
So, it follows logically that it was also my first time not winning either of them.
Mind you, it was also the first year that I was nominated in the Best Landscape Image category.
And I won that.
Here it is:

Want to hear a funny(-ish) story? A print of this image had been hanging on my chiropractor’s wall for the last few months, along with some of my other work. He needed to fill some wall space and it looked like a good marketing opportunity. Anyway, he recently had to clear some room for some of his own marketing material and this is the print he decided to ditch. Fate has a cruel sense of humour.

This week Sarah Galvin of Heritage Hampers collected “Cork Business Woman of the Year”. Sarah has been a client since our early days in Cork and has been tremendously supportive of the business.
Another client, Samantha Rathling of Expect Recruitment, impressed the judging panel so much that a special merit award was created to honour her. Like myself, Sam is a recent arrival in Ireland. In short time, she has established a big reputation for herself and her business, and like Sarah, Sam has been a good customer too.
Congratulations to both.

Membership of the Irish Professional Photographers Association (IPPA) gets you into the annual national photography awards. The deal is that you qualify work over three preliminary rounds and then compile a final panel of four images that have scored a silver crest or higher to go forward for the final judging. It all culminates in an Oscar-like shindig at the Shelbourne in Dublin in January.
The final preliminary judging was at IPPA-HQ last Monday. I’d already qualified sufficient images for my nomination for Irish Commercial Photographer of the Year over the last two rounds, so I was able to put in some more experimental stuff. That includes the picture below, which picked up a gold.
It was taken down on my favourite beach here in Co. Cork - Rocky Bay and will form part of a series of limited edition prints that I’m working on for the chiropractic sector. A copy is already hanging in my own chiropractor’s office.
